Job Description

Title: Managing Editor – Publications

Dermsquared operates two publications:

  1. The Dermatology Online Journal (DOJ) is a peer-reviewed, open-access publication dedicated to advancing the field of dermatology by publishing high-quality research, reviews, and case studies that inform and improve clinical practice. Founded in 1995, DOJ is among the first and most respected online journals in the field, with a global readership of clinicians, researchers, and educators.
  2. SKIN: The Journal for Cutaneous Medicine is a bi-monthly, peer-reviewed, open access, online medical journal dedicated to providing an enhanced route to disseminate new dermatologic knowledge on all aspects of cutaneous disease.

Dermsquared is seeking a Managing Editor to serve as both the business and operational leader of our peer-reviewed publications. This individual will oversee the journals’ editorial and production workflow while driving innovation and developing new revenue-generating features, partnerships, and offerings that enhance the journals’ visibility, sustainability, and impact.

Working in close partnership with the Editor-in-Chief and the Director of Digital Projects, the Managing Editor will balance academic integrity with business growth—ensuring our publications continue to meet the highest standards of peer-reviewed publishing while identifying opportunities to expand its role within the broader Dermsquared ecosystem.

Accountability

The Managing Editor will have overall responsibility for the business performance and operational excellence of the Dermatology Online Journal. They will lead strategic planning, editorial workflow management, and business development initiatives, ensuring that all journal activities align with Dermsquared’s mission and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the business leader of the Dermatology Online Journal, responsible for driving sustainable growth through new content formats, special editions, sponsored features, educational supplements, and partnership programs.
  • Partner with the Editor-in-Chief to define and execute the journal’s editorial and strategic vision.
  • Oversee end-to-end editorial operations, including peer review, production, and publication processes to ensure quality, timeliness, and adherence to ethical standards (COPE, ICMJE).
  • Collaborate with Dermsquared’s marketing, analytics, and partnerships teams to enhance visibility, reader engagement, and industry collaboration.
  • Develop and manage the journal’s annual operating plan and budget, ensuring financial health and efficient resource allocation.
  • Track and analyze key performance indicators (submissions, readership, impact, revenue) and use insights to guide decision-making.
  • Build strategic relationships with academic institutions, professional societies, and industry stakeholders to support content, funding, and audience growth.
  • Manage the relationship with external vendors and technology providers supporting submission systems, copyediting, and production.
  • Innovate new digital and multimedia content offerings (e.g., visual abstracts, podcasts, interactive data features, conference coverage) to expand journal engagement.
  • Serve as a key ambassador for the journals within the global dermatology and publishing communities.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership essentials as described above.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MS, MPH, PhD, or MBA) preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in academic, medical, or scientific publishing, including experience in business or operational management roles.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans that integrate editorial, financial, and digital objectives.
  • Strong understanding of peer review systems, publication ethics, and open-access models.
  • Track record of developing revenue-generating initiatives within an academic or media setting.
  • Exceptional communication, project management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to translate data and trends into actionable strategies.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with editorial boards, marketing, sales, and technology teams.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and comfort operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
