Job Description

How You'll Make an Impact:

As a Senior Back End Engineer, you will implement new architectures, features, and best practices to scale the Cloudbeds platform while maintaining rapid response to customer needs. You'll drive the critical migration from monolithic systems to service-oriented architectures, ensuring zero downtime for thousands of properties worldwide, while delivering exceptional customer experiences through well-tested, performant, and scalable solutions across the full technology stack (90% backend, 10% frontend).

Our Reservation & Guest Team:

We're energized by working at the intersection of customer impact and technical excellence, managing core services that power the daily operations of thousands of properties—from check-ins to reservations. Our team thrives on collaborative architectural debates, practices continuous improvement (Kaizen), and rotates engineers through customer escalation duty to stay connected to the real-world impact of our solutions. Engineers who excel here view customer issues as learning opportunities, approach legacy code as puzzles to be solved rather than burdens to bear, and strike a balance between architectural perfection and shipping timely solutions—all while upholding our non-negotiable commitment to testing and code quality.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Write production-ready, well-tested code daily in PHP (monolith) and Java (microservices), with occasional React/jQuery frontend work.

  • Partner directly with customer service teams to assess, triage, and resolve critical customer issues within 1-2 business days

  • Design and implement comprehensive test suites (PHPUnit, JUnit) for all new features and bug fixes, maintaining high test coverage

  • Drive architectural initiatives from concept to production, including the migration of critical legacy PHP systems to Java microservices.

  • Implement reliability patterns (retry mechanisms, circuit breakers, outbox patterns) for distributed systems.

  • Mentor team members on testing best practices, architectural patterns, and debugging techniques while balancing immediate customer needs with long-term improvements.

What Sets You Up for Success:

  • 6+ years of backend software development experience in B2B SaaS environments

  • Expert-level PHP experience (5+ years) with frameworks like Laravel/Symfony and comfortable working in large legacy codebases

  • 3+ years of production Java experience building microservices, preferably with Spring Boot

  • Deep testing expertise, including TDD practices and experience with PHPUnit, JUnit, Mockito, and integration testing for distributed systems

  • Strong MySQL expertise with query optimization

  • 2+ years designing event-driven architectures using Kafka, SQS, or similar messaging systems

  • Excellent communication skills to work with customer service, explain technical matters to stakeholders, and be comfortable with rapid context-switching

Bonus Skills to Stand Out (Optional):

  • Frontend experience with React and jQuery for full-stack flexibility

  • Experience with hospitality systems (PMS, channel managers, booking engines)

  • Knowledge of observability tools (DataDog, New Relic) and cloud infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
