About this role
Boulder Care is seeking a skilled and experienced Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain the data infrastructure that powers our analytics and decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data architecture, pipeline development, and cloud technologies, along with a passion for healthcare innovation. This role is key to ensuring data reliability, scalability, and accessibility across the organization—enabling our analytics, clinical, and operational teams to make evidence-based decisions that drive Boulder Care’s growth.
Essential Functions
Data Infrastructure & Architecture - 30%
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines to support analytics, operations, and reporting.
- Develop and manage data models, schemas, and warehouse structures (e.g., in BigQuery) to ensure data reliability and performance.
- Collaborate with analytics and engineering teams to implement efficient ETL/ELT processes that align with business and clinical workflows.
- Continuously optimize data architecture for scalability, cost-efficiency, and ease of use.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Partnership - 20%
- Partner with analytics, product, and engineering teams to understand data needs and translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Support clinical, operations, finance, and growth teams by ensuring the availability and accuracy of high-quality data.
- Serve as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment on data definitions, availability, and performance.
Technology, Tools & Security – 20%
- Build and manage data workflows using modern tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt, Fivetran, Looker, or equivalent).
- Ensure all data systems and processes comply with HIPAA and healthcare data security requirements.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and best practices to improve pipeline performance, reliability, and observability.
Data Quality, Governance & Documentation - 15%
- Implement robust data validation and monitoring systems to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain clear documentation, version control, and consistent naming conventions as part of broader data governance efforts.
- Collaborate with analytics leadership to define and enforce data standards, including lineage tracking and source-of-truth definitions.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation - 15%
- Proactively identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve data delivery speed.
- Stay current with trends in data engineering, cloud infrastructure, and healthcare data management.
- Contribute to a culture of learning and collaboration within the data and analytics organization.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or related roles.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift).
- Familiarity with modern data stack tools such as dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, or similar orchestration and transformation frameworks.
- Experience managing data modeling, schema design, and data integration across multiple systems (e.g., EHR, Candid, Zendesk, Salesforce).
- Working knowledge of Python or another scripting language for data processing and automation.
- Understanding of data governance, quality assurance, and HIPAA-compliant data handling.
- Experience supporting business intelligence tools (e.g., Looker) and enabling analytics teams with well-structured datasets.
Nice to Haves
- Experience with healthcare data (EHR, claims, or patient engagement systems).
- Hands-on experience with the Google Cloud data ecosystem, including BigQuery, Looker, and LookML development.
- Familiarity with Substance Use Disorder and/or other stigmatized populations
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time role, generally expected to be 40 hours per week. Team members may work with their managers to adjust work hours to suit the needs of the position. Team members may be asked to work additional days as work demands require.
Compensation
The starting pay range for this position is $125,000 - $150,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave).
