Scopely is looking for a Lead Software Engineer, Web/Full Stack to join our Pokémon GO Engineering team within our Niantic division in Mexico City on a hybrid basis working 3 days a week from the hub.

At Scopely, we care deeply about what we do and want to inspire play every day - whether in our work environments alongside our talented colleagues or through our deep connections with our communities of players. We are a global team of game lovers who are developing, publishing and innovating the mobile games industry, connecting millions of people around the world daily.

Niantic’s mission is to use emerging technology to enrich our experiences as human beings in the physical world. We build products that inspire movement, exploration, and face-to-face social interaction.

What You Will Do

Niantic’s Engineering Team is seeking an adventurous Lead Software Engineer, Web/Full Stack. We seek engineers with strong technical background, great execution, and self-starter mentality. The ideal candidate loves to jump into the unknown, clarify ambiguities, quickly learn from failures, and break down vague ideas into concrete tasks.

  • Build and lead a high performing cross functional team of engineers, designers and program managers based in Mexico City
  • Architect and implement high impact web full stack features end to end, in collaboration with engineering teams across sites
  • Build well-designed, reusable services and components that can be shared across Niantic’s web applications
  • Collaborate between eng, design, and product teams to ensure the goals of the product are aligned with the delivered feature or service
  • Participate in code reviews, write unit tests, and conduct troubleshooting to ensure uptime for live systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members and stakeholders to cultivate strong working relationships with project team members, including regular and reliable attendance and participation in meetings
  • Act as a cultural, linguistic and technical bridge between teams across global offices, including in the United States, Japan and Spain
  • Travel to Scopely’s various international offices as needed to facilitate planning, collaboration and team building, potentially including offices in the US, Tokyo and Barcelona
  • Required in-office 3 days per week, based in Mexico City, Mexico

What We're Looking For

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field
  • 3+ years industry experience in full stack web development or related fields
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers, strong cross functional collaboration, and leading projects
  • Demonstrated history leading delivery of projects involving multiple contributors
  • Proficiency in multiple application domains (e.g. cloud infrastructure, backend, frontend) and a demonstrated ability to learn and deliver products utilizing new technologies
  • Strong experience in advanced, modern JavaScript technologies and frameworks (GraphQL, React, Node)
  • Demonstrated ability to propose, implement and launch high impact features
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stress appropriately and/or ability to solve practical problems and be sufficiently adaptable to handle dynamic situations with little advance notice
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams with ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal communications, including synchronous interactions with others
  • Fluency in Spanish with ability to periodically travel to Scopely’s global offices, including ones in the United States, Japan or Barcelona

Bonus Points

  • Demonstrated commitment to quality including concrete deliverables around performance and test coverage
  • Experience in backend technologies (e.g. Golang, GRPC)
  • Experience building applications and products end to end
  • Experience managing engineering or multifunctional teams
  • Experience helping shape tactical and strategic product direction and execution as a strong engineering partner
  • Experience with Cloud Services like AWS / Azure / GCP
