Job Description
A little more about the team:
Rising data volumes are rapidly outpacing our human ability to find signal in the noise. As the manager of the Signals team, you'll lead the engineering team solving this: proactively surfacing issues and early warning signs, helping customers understand what's happening in their systems, and guiding them where to focus in complex environments. This work includes continued investments in our SLO, trigger, and alerting features as well as our highly anticipated anomaly detection capabilities. On the team, you'll manage engineers at various levels and collaborate closely with a product manager and a designer. Check out this blog post about our spicy take on stand-up meetings to see more about how our teams operate.
- Prioritize building a respectful, high-achieving, inclusive culture on the team, creating stability, psychological safety, and a high-trust environment that supports autonomy and calculated risk-taking.
- Build high-performing, sustainable team practices that enable us to deliver value incrementally while balancing trade-offs with scalable architectures.
- Build nurturing environments where healthy conflict is encouraged and where individuals that comprise a team can make each other better.
- Rely on your systems thinking to collaboratively build short- and long-term plans rooted in data and business context, framing projects and prioritization around impact to the business and value for the users.
- Communicate your own team’s roadmap and strategy across the organization as well as understand how it intersects with your team’s partners.
- Lead with a sense of urgency and uphold high standards and expectations for your team by modeling them yourself.
Courageous communicator and motivator
- Lead by example and proactively foster psychological safety in your team and the wider organization, practicing what you preach when giving and receiving honest, direct, and constructive feedback regularly.
- Develop strong cross-functional relationships across the company.
- Make the implicit explicit when it comes to strategy, plans, and the ways we work together.
Develops self and others
- Get curious about feedback when receiving feedback and seek to understand when giving feedback. Work with those giving feedback to make sure it's specific and actionable.
- Don't just retain high performers but help develop and grow more high performers. Develop and empower your team to grow professionally & personally and in support of our business goals.
- Focus on upleveling yourself and others in this fast-changing environment.
Think like an owner
- Know your business, drive results, and understand company priorities to help your team prioritize and balance investments. Drive technical decision-making and tradeoffs across the team's entire software stack, balancing business impact and long-term system health.
- Look across the organization and identify holes in ownership and raise them. Identify when work is poorly distributed across teams and work with leadership to resolve the issue. Partner with your management peers to fill gaps and brainstorm creative solutions together that might be outside of the usual guidelines.
- Foster a belief in your team that we all come to the table with the positive intent towards Honeycomb's overall success. Make decisions that are in the best interest of the company and encouraging others to do the same, thereby welcoming everyone to contribute to Honeycomb's mission.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- You have some experience leading a high-performing team of engineers, including managing and shipping cross-functional or multi-team projects. You are excited to support and grow empowered teams through a blend of psychological safety and positive accountability.
- You live and breathe collaboration with product and design to understand the larger business context and frame projects and prioritization around impact to the business and users. A strong candidate for this role would be familiar with triad-based collaboration and design thinking. Bonus points if you are familiar with the Product Management philosophies of people like Marty Cagan and Teresa Torres.
- You've worked in product engineering roles with meaningful backend experience and understand the technology, tools, and challenges enough to rise to at least a Senior Engineer or an equivalent level. You're endlessly curious about the technologies your team works with and strive to keep your technical knowledge sharp — but you also feel comfortable knowing your greatest impact won't be as a technical contributor.
- You understand the value of building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team and bring that lens to your work as a leader in hiring, team culture, and beyond. We are trying to raise the standards for developer tools, and we know that a diverse, inclusive, equitable team will help us build better products for a larger swath of the industry.
- You have demonstrated experience shaping and improving software delivery. We don’t crave process for its own sake — but we know the right process at the right time can help everyone breathe easier, worry less about the small stuff, and deliver great work more efficiently. You understand methodologies like Agile, XP, and Lean, and see their value, but don't believe there's only one right way to get work done.
- You are comfortable with the pace and trade offs of a growth stage startup (meaning: know how to take care of yourself and your team, get your work done without working around the clock, prioritize ruthlessly, be able to tolerate a little uncertainty and sometimes wear different hats).
