About the role

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and optimise large-scale data solutions that power customer engagement, commerce, and analytics platforms operating at significant scale. In this role, you’ll work with terabyte-scale datasets and high-volume data systems, shaping data products that enable insight, performance, and data-driven decision-making across the organisation.

You’ll collaborate closely with Data Scientists, Software Engineers, Solution Architects, and business stakeholders, playing a key role in defining data architecture, pipeline design, and governance standards in a cloud-first environment.

Responsibilities

    • Lead the design and implementation of scalable ETL pipelines and data lakes in AWS
    • Develop and optimise data architectures for terabyte-scale relational and distributed data systems
    • Collaborate with Data Scientists, Software Engineers, and Architects to integrate data solutions into analytics platforms and applications
    • Translate non-technical business requirements into clear, actionable technical solutions
    • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform to automate and standardise deployments
    • Drive performance optimisation through indexing strategies, query tuning, and scalable data modelling
    • Ensure strong data governance, security, compliance, and quality controls across all environments
    • Automate workflows and enforce best practices for data quality, lineage, and reliability
    • Provide peer review and QA support for data engineering deliverables
    • Produce clear, structured documentation for data pipelines, architectures, and operational processes

Requirements

    • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with terabyte-scale databases and high-volume data systems
    • Strong understanding of core data engineering principles, including: Logical and physical data modelling (normalisation & denormalisation), ETL design and orchestration, Performance optimisation and scalability, Data quality, governance, and security
    • Advanced expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, including SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS
    • Proficiency with AWS Cloud services such as EC2, S3, RDS, and Glue
    • Experience using Terraform for infrastructure automation and deployment
    • Strong ability to translate business and stakeholder requirements into technical designs
    • Solid documentation skills, producing clear and maintainable technical artefacts
    • Advanced MS Excel skills (complex formulas, PowerPivot, VBA)
    • Experience using Python for data wrangling, automation, or pipeline support
    • Exposure to working across multiple cloud technologies and environments
    • Experience with BI tools such as Power BI and/or Tableau
    • Familiarity with AWS governance frameworks and compliance standards
    • Degree in a quantitative discipline (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or similar)

Nice to have

    • Domain experience in retail, banking, CRM, loyalty platforms, or digital marketing
    • Experience supporting data products used by customer-facing or commercial teams
    • Background working in fast-growing, data-driven or platform-based environments
